being judgmental

you're so judgmental,
i tell my friend
Betty
while we
sit in a restaurant, staring
at a menu.
she's a circuit court judge
in town.
well, that's my
job,
she says.
i carefully listen to both
sides of the story
and determine
by facts, not emotion
or political persuasion if
the perp is guilty or not
guilty.
and then i hand down my
ruling.
i'm rarely ever wrong.
so what do you see on the menu
that you
want to eat, my judicial friend?
hmmmm.
she says.
i can't decide.
do the cooks here
vote on the left
or right?
right.
oh no, well,
we can always go somewhere else.
