telling
children about your life
when young.
they listen
and laugh, roll their
eyes,
shake their heads
in unison.
really? they say.
you really had no shoes
to go to school
in, you drank
powdered milk
and went to bed
hungry. there was
no heat, no air
conditioning.
who can
blame them
for their doubt.
you hardly believe it
yourself.
