oh well, good luck

we meet at the zoo
for a walk.
we don't hold hands anymore.
that part
is over.
but we need to talk,
to bring
things to an end.
closure
some call it.
so we walk past the cages
holding lions.
holding
zebras,
wild birds in the air,
nets keeping
them from flying off.
we say little that hasn't
already been said.
we too were trapped,
i think, staring deeply
into the eyes
of a beast
holding tightly to the bars.
she hands me her keys,
kisses me on the cheek,
and says,
oh well. i guess that's it.
good luck.
