a peanut butter sandwich
as a kid.
using the chair
to climb onto the counter
to reach the cabinet where
the bread
and jar was.
i took out
two slices
of wonder bread,
grape jelly from the fridge,
and with a broad
knife went to work.
spreading
the peanut butter onto
a slice, then
the jelly.
aligning the two
pieces and
pressing down.
not too much
coming out the sides.
a pat or two
for good measure.
it kept me alive
in those formative years.
if i wanted to be fancy
i'd make a diagonal cut
from one corner to the other.
and if there was milk
to wash it down,
that was gold
