from bed
to door, to bath.
the robe tied on,
then down
the stairs, the hall,
a light switched
bright
with the other
hand.
easy he goes, descending
the deep flight,
holding the rail.
and there is the cat
on the kitchen sill.
in the winters light.
curled
and patient,
purring gently,
like a love he once
had
in another life.
