come back from war
after being shot at
and killing a bunch of people
they never knew.
get these kids out of the house
before i go nuts,
i'd hear my father
say, stomping his
army boots on the floor.
he'd rub the tattoos on his arm
while pouring himself
a glass of whiskey with
a camel cigarette
dangling in his mouth.
he'd go out onto the back porch
to think, he'd tell my mother.
don't bother me
for awhile.
and tell your son
that there's no way in hell
we're ever buying
a japanese car.
