the unknown tomorrow

before dark
i'll get a bike ride in.

the woods will hollow out
a path
of shadows.

the walkers
will be in by then, having
dinner.

the path will be clear.
i'll see a deer
or two
still on the edge of
the stream.

i'll ride hard to the end,
to where the water
gathers, to where it
descends
down the side of the concrete
damn.

i'll look at the train
rumbling over the trestle
as I ride under.

i'll watch the sun melt
into the blue stretch of the lake,
fisherman
throwing lines out towards
the darkening
end.

i'll remember this day,
this moment,

then gather myself to ride
home, swift
and strong into an unknown
tomorrow.
