these poor children
standing on the corner.
back packs loading them
down like mini
astronauts awaiting lift
off.
the fear in their eyes,
stiff in their new clothes,
the timid waves to
parents crying,
as the ship arrives,
yellow and long
with black lettering,
the same as they've always
been. a stout woman, or
old man at the wheel,
flipping the doors
open, yelling sit down
and be quiet.
off they go, first day
at school. the dream
is over.
