she painted mostly pears
in bowls.
still life.
apples,
and the dead
from photographs
of obituaries
in the paper.
portraits
shadowed
in bright colors,
dappled
in sunlight.
you weren't in love
with her,
nor her
with you, but you saw
the first
new strokes
of her work before
leaving,
and she yours.
