not far out of town

it's not far out of town,
not too
long down the road, where
the world
has slowed down,
and rolled just a little
backwards
or froze.
you see the filling station
family run,
the small stores
with porches where the old
folks come
to talk of things
they've heard.
the water tower is visible
from every window.
a dog for each yard
and a flag raised
on the town pole.
it's quaint in a curious sort
of way.
why are they here,
what makes them stay?
