invasion from mars

ernie,
had a flair
for drama.
seeing a green meteor falling
from the sky
as we played stick ball out in street
ran into the house
and phoned
the white house to tell
them about
how we were being invaded
by creatures
from mars.
we gathered around the phone
as he talked
frantically
about the green light
that flashed across
the sky,
heading north over
Washington d.c. .
they could all be dead now,
we thought,
this could be the end of
the human race,
our hearts raced.
one girl, cried,
while another boy ran home
to be with his parents
when death came.
they said they were going
to look into, ernie told
us as he hung
up the phone,
then we went back outside
to finish the game.
