there's no end in sight

it's just a sidewalk.
and yet
three weeks later, they're
still working on
it. back hoes,
plows,
cement mixers.
a gaggle of
men with white helmets
arriving each
day to adjust
the wood frames, the yellow
tape. hammering in again
the signs saying
don't park here.
it's endless.
the transcontinental
railway was built
in a week,
the empire state building
took a hundred days.
but the sidewalk
in front of my
house,
there's no end in sight.
