come upon the small turtles
baking
in the sun
on a grey log, they squat
and kneel
to stare
and gaze at each one.
and then
one child rises with a stick
and strikes
against
their hard backs.
this is the child
that will wreak havoc
upon the world.

No likely not. It is likely the other kids who stood and watched that will wreak more havoc. But, who knows? Maybe the kid just had a phobia about turtles. Like me and birds. And mice.
