the new toaster oven

on the way home
from the beach, we pulled
over
at a produce stand.
she wanted tomatoes,
a melon,
some peaches.
we'd only been married
for three days,
but it was already
three days
too long.
she knew and i knew,
that this was a mistake.
her at nineteen,
me at twenty two.
but we stuck it out for six
months,
before i looked out the
window and saw
her pulling her
pink suitcase
down the road and carrying
a toaster oven under
her arm.
