renters

the renters don't care
much.
as long as the water works,
the toilets flush,
the lights flick on,
the bugs
are kept out.
they don't care about the paint
on the walls,
or the hardwood floors,
or the loose screws
in the cabinet doors.
they'll be gone soon,
leaving much
of what they brought behind.
bananas gone black
on the counter,
a dirty frying pan
on the stove.
a wet load of laundry
in the machine.
a closet full of old shoes.
