the waiting

if you wait long
enough
nothing will happen.
that love won't fall through
the roof.
that new job
won't appear.
you'll still be out of shape
and fat.
that book won't read itself.
a stray cat will not
suddenly
be in your lap.
the retirement homes
are full of people
that waited
too long for something
to happen.
something different that
would give
meaning
to their lives.
they wait for something
else now.
