the sun
is a blistering
white
ball of heat
making
the lawns shimmer.
the water
shine
with the last
days
of summer.
hardly a splash
is made.
you can barely
move out
of the shade
to dive into
the warm blue
pool,
where even
the lifeguard
in his chair is
weary of his whistle,
his skin melting
brown in the thick
September
air.
