the window seat

someone
who looks like
someone
you used to know
sits
beside you
on the train.
do I know you,
you ask her,
folding
your newspaper
up to see
her face.
yes, she says.
we were married
once in
the eighties.
oh, right you
say, right.
I remember now.
we had a house
and a cat.
whatever happened
to that cat.
dead, she says.
liver disease.
oh that's too bad.
she was old,
she says, she had
a good run.
like us? you say.
not really she
says. do you mind
if I change
seats with you,
and move
over there,
by the window.
please. go right
ahead, you say.
you've changed
she says. you've
changed.
