the tall oak trees

in the end.
she heard voices. saw things.
had conversations
with invisible
souls
long gone.
she was rattled and confused,
the clothes
hung on her bones.
her once blue eyes now grey,
sunken in.
she lived
behind the store
in a patch of woods
and would come out at
times
to hold a sign beside
the road. a red hat.
I knew her when. who
hasn't
known her or him,
now
wandering in the shadows
of tall oak
trees.
