a romantic interlude

after dinner and one
drink too many,
we monkey around
for a while
in the back seat of the car,
parked in
a lot near the mall,
but I pinch
a nerve in my back,
reaching too far,
bumping my knee into
the gear shift while
trying to
unsnap a button.
then she starts to get
a cramp
in her leg, breaking
the heel
of her shoe
on the seat
belt, so we stop to
catch our breath
and take an aspirin.
but then
we hear knocking
so i rub a circle
of steam off the windows
to look out at a cop
rapping
with his knuckles,
holding a flashlight
and shaking his head,
while wagging a finger.
