we were free range children.
allowed
to go out and wander
leaving the borders of
our fenced yards.
a summers day could take us
miles
into the woods,
across the highway
that led us across
a stream, behind
the stores,
up trees.
there was no limits,
no strings,
no leash attached.
an alley was as pleasant
as any meadow.
no eyes
to follow us to save
us if
need be.
we wandered and wandered
until hungry and then came
home. not unlike
today.
