over looking the racetrack

you and Sheila
used to climb the steep
grassy hill
that overlooked
the racetrack.
the glow of the lights
far enough away
to keep you hidden.
she'd bring a blanket
some wine,
you'd lie upon
the hill and stare
up at the stars
in the summer heat,
you listened to the call
of the races.
between the beating
of your own hearts
against one another.
you heard
the thunder of the hooves
as the horses
rounded the hard
dirt track.
you knew that what
you had wouldn't last
forever, but it
didn't matter.
it was just a race
when you were young
and strong,
able to run and run
with the wind.
