standing by
the fountain you see
people with
their eyes closed,
mumbling something
to themselves before
tossing in a coin
they've dug out
of their pocket or
purse. they are
sending wishes
up to some invisible
money grubbing
deity who may or
may not grant the wish.
at night, the custodian
drains the pool,
gathers the coins
and then refills it.
throwing in his own
coin for his own wish.
which is for more
people to want
things they'll never
have.
