I keep meeting men
who are unavailable
she says to me
while knitting another
sweater.
the ball of yarn
is on the floor
as the needles
clink against one
another. well, maybe
they just don't like
you enough to commit
to you, you tell
her, squinting as
if about to be jabbed
in the leg
with a needle.
hmmm, she says,
stopping her knitting
for a moment to
stare out at the setting
sun. maybe you're
right, she says.
I never thought that
it could be me, I
always blamed it
on them, men being
men. but it's me
isn't it? nice sweater
you say. can't wait
to see it when it's
finished.
