the symphony

through your
wall
the adjoining
one
to your neighbor's
house,
bedroom
against bedroom
you hear
her making
love
with her new
boyfriend.
there is a violence
to it that
makes you worry
about how
it might turn
out. it's
a symphony of highs
and lows.
drums
and violins,
trombones,
and a cymbal
crashing in the end.
you are as
exhausted as they
must be
when it's over.
at this point
you'd get up
and light a cigarette
if you smoked,
instead you lay
there, listen
to her front door
close and for
his car to start,
then pull away
in the dead of night.
