the singer
is not taking requests
as he stands on the makeshift
stage,
in sweat.
around him people
talk, and ignore,
they eat, drink,
answer their phones,
go out the door for
a cigarette.
he has
his play list and won't
stray
from the songs, the chords,
the
music that he
knows best.
someone yells out
play Elton,
play
Gordon, play Morrison,
or Joan Jette,
but he'll have none of
it
with his guitar, his
harmonica,
his drums and clarinet.
