the safe

I turn the dials
on her.
my ear to the cold walls
of the metal box
that she is.
click click click.
but the safe
door doesn't open.
I pry it with sweet words
and flowers.
nothing.
I take a hammer,
a blow torch,
a bomb, finally, to see
what's inside.
it could be anything,
it could be love,
it could be
nothing.
something this hard
it might be best
to leave it shut
and go on
about our lives.
