stepping out

stepping out into
the morning glare,
a thick coat
is not enough, a scarf
and hat,
gloves, and boots.
still not enough
to keep the wind at bay,
the cold
from entering your bones
and making you
shout out a word
that you don't want
children to hear
what you say.
