your shadow,
tired in the heat,
takes a break,
you look back and see
it on a bench, resting,
leaning the way shadows do
angular and bent, almost
the shape of you.
you wave it on, say, hey
let's go, we have places
to be, but it doesn't budge,
it stays put, stays quiet
under the dappled light
of a summer sun dancing
through the trees.
