saving the fish

as kids in the 60's we'd
fish not far from the blue plains sewage
treatment plant
along the river.
close to the Wilson Bridge.
the fish were either extremely
large,
or dead.
almost all of them had open
wounds,
or scars.
we felt like we were saving them
from their slow
polluted death.
they had that get me out of
here look in their
eyes,
but how nice the river looked
from a far,
beatifically blue,
as we walked down the trail
to cast out
our hopeful lines
and nets.
