upside down

seeing a car upside down
on the side
of the road always surprises you.
you slow down
to see the chaos.
the firemen are there,
blocking
as much of the road as
possible
with their long truck.
an ambulance spins
its lights, the back doors
open and ready
for business,
a stretcher is out
rolled towards the motionless
car, the turtle
on it's back.
someone is tossing sand
onto the pavement.
another man is holding a flare
and telling you to go
around, go right.
keep it moving. but you have
to look.
the car is upside down.
