the desert
is a wide dry ocean
of sand.
annoying
cactus
mockingly dot
the land,
prickly and green,
horrible
things. rattle snakes
shake their tails
in the shadow of rocks.
the dunes roll on
forever.
no water, no oasis.
nothing
but the sun beating
down
like an inferno
as I crawl
across on my knees
and hands.
if I ever get to the other
side,
i'll give you
a call.
