the hospital visit

i visit my friend Jimmy
in the hospital.
his room is full of flowers
and gift baskets
stuffed with fruit
and candy,
the flies and bees are everywhere.
hey,
he says, as i come in and
give him
a pack of cigarettes and a pint
of whiskey.
when are you getting out
of here? i'm tired of picking
up your mail
and walking your dog.
i don't know. they still can't
figure out what's
wrong with me.
he winks and whispers,
cupping his hand,
i'm fine,
just indigestion from the Mexican
food i had last week,
but i think
i'm in love with the night
nurse, so i'm faking it,
dragging it out until
my insurance man comes by
to investigate.
dude, he says, you have to
check yourself in here.
pull that curtain back,
that bed is empty now, you
can probably take it.
the guy who was in there
was wheeled out yesterday.
this place is a gold mine for babes.
here comes one now with my
lunch.
hello, Vanessa, he says,
this is my friend. he's single
and drives a Lexus.
she smiles at me and sashays
out of the room.
the Salisbury steak isn't too bad,
but if you want
you can have my Jello.
go ahead dig in, here use
this spork.
