hanging on

I see
them hanging on
to the cliff
of love and affection,
clawing at the side
of what was,
but it's over.
nails dug
in. frantic, trying
to hold on
to the mountain,
boots struggling
to find a divot
to keep them steady.
they don't realize
that they're only
two
feet off the ground,
not a thousand.
they need to let go.
other cliffs are out
there.
other mountains
to climb
and rest upon
with easier roads,
and rest stops along
the way.
