pork chops

there were seven
pan fried pork chops
on the plate.
excluding your mother's
who ate hers while
standing in the kitchen
over the sink.
everyone got one, so
it wasn't about that.
it was more about
which one was the largest
and who had the quickest
fork to stab it
and make it their own.
you had a very quick
fork those days
and could size
things up much faster
than the others
who were busy with
spoons of corn, bread
and butter, dessert cake.
