table for one

you wake up wanting
eggs.
bacon. potatoes.
she's left you
strangely hungry
for a meal.
toast and jam.
juice and coffee.
it's still dark out,
just past
the hour of five.
you think about finding
a diner on the side
of the road
to work.
or maybe you'll skip
work and drive
somewhere you haven't
been in awhile,
Baltimore,
or ocean city,
or south to Richmond.
any place will do.
no need to pack a bag,
just go.
follow some empty road,
then eat,
table for one, not two.
