other blue skies

the yesterdays
collected neatly in albums
under the coffee
table
in front of the tv
are there
for you to see,
to pick up
on a rainy night
and say out loud
things like,
how young we were once.
how much fun
we had.
look at the smiles,
remember how cold the ocean
was that day.
you looked happy
then, I remember that book
in your hand.
I still have it
somewhere on the shelf
behind me.
we were young then.
skinny
and long, unknowing
about so much
of what was to come.
I say these things alone,
though.
you are off and married
again.
the child we had is grown.
the dogs
have come and gone.
our lives, like balloons
have veered off
into other blue skies.
