we're going backwards

you read in the paper
that half the people alive today
were not alive when man
first landed on the moon.
this scares you, in fact you
pee your pants a little
and have to sit down
to catch your breath.
you wonder in another
fifty years what great event
will attach itself to such
a depressing statement.
perhaps someone will say
with big wide eyes that
only half the people were alive
today when the 4 G phone
was introduced.
