the broken dish

it's just a plate,
but as it slips
from her hand
and in slow motion
tumbles over and
over in mid air,
from blue to white
then blue again,
before it strikes
the floor into
a hundred pieces,
there is a moment
of wonder in how
quickly things
turn and fall from
our grasps, take
love for instance.

Did you see the movie: Heartburn (Nora Ephron's novel/movie.) My favorite scene is when they are at dinner with friends and a dish drops and shatters and Meryl Streep equates it to what happens when trust in a marriage is broken--you can try to put it back together (a million pieces-the complexity of it all) or walk away.
